it could b a misunderstanding/alex might have kept his plans secret from cecil to keep em safe, as he cared about his father n was sad when uncle came to him n he thinks sophia is like him (in chess chp there was a foreshadowing : about strategic sacrifice in chess: sacrificing your chess pieces to win n ml thought sophia was like him n that she might be plotting revenge too meaning he may be plotting revenge while pretending to be under his uncles control too n he used his fathers death before fire to pretend to have killed his father n be on his uncles side: similar to strategic sacrifice) . confession isnt enough to prove someones guilt if there isnt Enough evidence n in his case theres only circumstancial evidence + confession. there is no proof apart from it that he d his dad (he may/may not have set fire after his dads death).but if not n i m wrong then it d b sad.
