I really think they weren't trying to be bullies... it seemed like they were normalizing it. That's the same kinda crap teens do to new M/F couples. It really didn't seem malicious, but people often don't realize when the recipient of the teasing has reached their limit. I'm not saying their behavior is acceptable, just that most readers wouldn't be fazed by it if they were a straight couple.
