The story is set in a fictional version of Europe in 1930, in the country of Gallia. Because of its abundance of ragnite ore—which can be refined into a powerful fuel—it has come under attack from the East European Imperial Alliance, which itself is engaged in war with the Atlantic Federation. The story revolves around Gallian soldiers led by Welkin Gunther, son of Gallian war hero General Belgen Gunther, in a bid to reclaim their war-torn neutral nation from Imperial Alliance forces and drive them off from Gallian soil after they had launched an invasion into the country.

In a future world known as Sand Land, the one river that supplied the entire world had suddenly stopped, and the only source of water is from the greedy king's overpriced water bottles. Demons and humans live together in a world of drought, until Sheriff Rao confronts Beelzebub in need of a demon on a quest to find the Phantom Lake, a river on which birds called Water Finches supply themselves. Though reluctant at first, Beelzebub goes along (thanks to a good bribe) and brings an older demon, Thief, with him to find the lake for the good of all creatures, whether demon or human.

Interestingly, one of the features that most of the Logs share are the publication of some omakes, an English loanword in Japanese for remakes. Those remake comics are three-page ones that tend to parody other genres. Those side comics were drawn when Oda was given three sheets of blank paper by his editor and told to draw anything. Animated versions, subtitled as Mugiwara Theater, were broadcasted on October 2006 along recap episodes 279 to 283. They featured omakes released from 2nd to 7th Logs. Some omakes were released outside of the Logs. Zig, a young boy from Cantalera, a wandering tribe where fighting and wanting to become stronger is prohibited; after his father fell victim of some monsters, decides to train against the tribe rules, and seeing how despite his training he couldn't save the inhabitants of the tribe from the monsters, he decides to set off on a journey to join Bazalta and make his way to the top. The events take place during the Great Exhibition of technological breakthroughs in Victorian England, in mid-nineteenth century. One day his grandfather Lloyd returns from the United States, where he is working with his son to a secret project called for the multinational Ohara Foundation, and handing the boy a metal ball that can produce an immense energy. This marks the beginning of the adventures of the boy, who from that moment it will be hunted by the henchmen of the U.S. company and its competitors, eager to retrieve the precious item needed for their major project: the imposing Tower Steam, the ultimate war machine. A clash of generations between father, son and nephew, their world views and values of life, a brilliant critique of modern society and war.
